Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the stage before menopause when your body begins the natural transition out of its reproductive years. It can start as early as your mid-30s or as late as your mid-50s, and it may last anywhere from a few months to several years. During this time, your ovaries slowly make less estrogen and other reproductive hormones. As a result, your menstrual periods can become irregular, lighter, heavier, or less predictable than before.

Many people experience symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, trouble sleeping, and vaginal dryness. These symptoms can vary from person to person and may affect daily life. Perimenopause ends when you have gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period which is considered to be the start of menopause.

Hormonal Changes During Perimenopause

The biggest hormonal change during perimenopause is a gradual drop in estrogen, a hormone that helps regulate your menstrual cycle and supports your reproductive health. As estrogen levels change, progesterone levels also become unbalanced because ovulation happens less often.

During this transition, hormone levels can rise and fall from month to month, which is why symptoms and menstrual cycles can seem unpredictable. By the time menopause begins, your ovaries produce very little estrogen and stop releasing eggs. This means your periods stop permanently, and you can no longer become pregnant naturally.
